Neon signage has now been around for decades; the signs in red, yellow blue and all other colours flashing brightly on shop fronts in the dark of the night are seldom noticed due to their common use.

However, in terms of graphic-design neon colours can really add something and could be considered akin their effect to when they first became popular in the 1920s, until they became less often seen after the 1960s.

Unlike in the past need where there was a luminous tube, all most graphic designers need is a Photoshop palette to create such effects. Neon can have a powerful effect on sites, logos and all other areas and really create a certain feel.

As neon lighting and colours are associated with the past, in many cases the aforementioned period and afterwards can be seen to be linked with more dilapidated remains, it can be used to create a number of effects on websites. Neon is associated with colourful dance music of the early 90s and can also be used to create that sort of fun effect.

Neon can also be used with a number of other design and style tweaks, such as textures and obviously font to create effects. It is also well catered for in the graphic-design field and there are a number of tools used on different programmes to achieve the effect. This neon effect sign is a fine example of what can be created using Photoshop.

Neon is not limited to sites and with the resurgence of the colours in art, it is seen on business cards in numerous shapes and forms.

Neon stands out from traditional colours, and its garish colours somehow create a loud but ironically stylish effort. It can also make ideal minimalist logos for companies as it is very effective at creating a lot from little more than a continuous line. The fundamental shape can be turned into something that looks very effective with the use of the neon line running around it. This is simple, effective and also distinctive because of this and gives a lot more individuality than a plain black line.

Neon can be used to give the traditional a contemporary feel in brochures, and the mere addition of such a colour can really enliven proceedings in a publication. The addition of a neon colour can make the normal look remarkable and brighten things up.
It is also fantastic for use with certain events or industries that are associated with the colours involved. This Creamfield’s brochure for a dance music inspired festival is a fine use of neon in an industry where it is associated

The colours suit the mood and really enliven the brochure and give the sense of an impression desired.

Of course, the strength of neon colours means they should be used with thought and there will be certain instances where they are unsuitable for graphic-design purposes, won’t go with the context or other colours, or just look out of place for one reason or another. A good designer should use their discretion in such an instance and make their own mind up.

Neon colour offers vast potential beyond the atypical colours for use in graphic design and can really add something extra when used well. Discretion is advised, but being open to these colours is essential.

Current technology advertising trends veer towards the iconic, minimalist and slick, with limited amounts of copy and super-glossy design. However a quick look back through the annals reveals that this wasn’t always the case. As the world began to move towards a more technologically savvy age at the turn of the twentieth century, consumers sought reassurance and information from their press advertisements, whether they were looking to upgrade to the latest gramophone in the 1920s or indulge in the newest mobile phone in the 1980s. Here we take a brief look at the trends and styles that have defined press technology advertising throughout the last 100 years, bringing us bang up to date with today’s cutting-edge approach.

This press campaign for a 1920s telephone from Western Electronics shows just how much product information consumers craved at this time. The headline “a metal tongue millions of miles long” is both trying to de-mystify the product and create a tangible customer benefit, and the illustration underlines this statement. It’s far removed from today’s approach, which shies a “say what you see” headline and image partnership wherever possible.

Similarly this 1930s advertisement for a domestic battery pack uses bold typography to literally communicate the benefits of the product. Whether bought for a radio, lighting or other power source this simple approach leaves the target audience in no doubt about the product’s function. And if you still weren’t too sure, the headline reiterates the point.

Cue the 1940s and this campaign, for a Magnavox television, shows a distinct step towards the future of technology advertising. It shows the television in situ, selling both a lifestyle benefit as well as the product, and features thumbnail detail shots to highlight functionality. The level of copy has been kept to a minimum, relying instead on the headline and price-point to do the hard sell.

The stereotypical 1950s, a housewife is used to promote this television set from RCA. Using friezes to display its versatility and user-friendly functions, it is portrayed as the perfect addition to the perfect household – both the television set and the model; the epitome of 1950s domestic bliss.

During the 1960s as the commercially competitive world expanded, advertising agencies began to take a more sophisticated approach to press advertising. Gone is the smiling housewives, the literal headline and the use of multiple product shots. Instead, as can be seen here, a simple, confident line replaces the literal and the product is presented conceptually as opposed to in-situ; stylistically much more akin to the technology press advertisements we are familiar with today.

This stunning example, taken from RCA’s 1970s campaign for the home-radio, shuns product shots, models and price points entirely. It demonstrates a marked change in technology advertising, where iconography, typography and lifestyle benefits are all that are required to help this product revolutionise home entertainment.

What’s most interesting about this 1980s campaign for one of the very first mobile phones is that it shows a clear step backwards in press advertising creative techniques. Note the excessive amount of copy, the numerous shots of the product in use by aspirational models and the direct customer-benefit headline. One can only assume that as this was a brand new product to the market, advertising creatives returned to the tried and tested approach taken earlier in the century when launching the first television sets; seeking to reassure, inspire and convince customers with a self-conscious hat-tip to the past.

Step into the 1990s and this fridge-freezer campaign takes a fresh new approach. Rather than showcasing what the product can do for the customer, it chooses to assert the prestige of the brand. Claiming that “this is what happens when you think about food 24 hours a day” places GE Answer Center in a position of authority, a brand consumers can aspire to own.

Moving into the 2000s this shot, taken from the highly successful “I’m a PC” campaign, shows just how little information technology consumers now require when it comes to making a purchase decision. It relies on the audience making character assumptions based on Mitchell and Webb’s Peep Show personas and the positive and negative connotations associated with them. By selecting the right representative to endorse your product it can appear over-confident, smug and pretentious or smart, understated and sensible without even requiring a headline; welcome to the 21st century.

Anybody who has done some serious (or even not so serious) web design work knows what a pain Internet Explorer 6 can be.

Designs that render correctly in compliant browsers such as Firefox, Chrome and Safari just do not work in IE6 (or sometimes even in IE7 and IE8). Significant rework and workarounds are often required to make a website “compliant” for IE6.

So now that we have rolled into a new year, it’s time to make a decision. Should I still attempt to make my website designs IE6 compliant (even if a client asks for it)?

Before making a rash decision, let’s look at some statistics. The following screenshots are from my Clicky Web Analytics account. I use Clicky for real-time analytics as well as Google Analytics. In a future post I’ll outline why Clicky is so useful.

It is important to note how the data is calculated. Clicky states that its Market Share data is calculated from over 200 million daily page views across the 250,000+ web sites that use Clicky Web Analytics. I was considering using my own traffic statistics for this article, but since my audience is mainly US based, it would not be a real global sample and I also have way less page views.

Now let’s examine the statistics to see the actual Web Browser Market Share data. Note that the vertical axis on all charts is percentage of market share.

Web Browsers (Global Market Share)

It’s not surprising that Internet Explorer has the most market share. Most users are using a Windows OS and have not bothered to install another web browser or have been unable to due to strict corporate guidelines.

Web Browsers by Version (Global Market Share)

Here we can see all the major web browsers and versions. IE8 is the most popular. The statistic that I am interested in is IE6 which currently has about 4.5% global market share and is declining.

Internet Explorer (Global Market Share)

Let’s show just the global Internet Explorer statistics. IE6 & IE 7 are declining whilst IE8 is increasing market share. IE9 is only for Beta testers at this stage.

Internet Explorer (China Market Share)

The main thing that you need to be aware of is that China has the most users of IE6 as shown on this chart. If you are selling products into China then you will have to support IE6.

Conclusion

Using these statistics from Clicky Web Analytics, for me personally I will not longer be supporting IE6 with any of my web design work. I won’t purposely make sites IE6 non-compliant, but if I have IE6 issues I will not be implementing any workarounds. It’s just not worth the hassle to cater for a web browser with a 4.5% and declining market share. The other thing to note that if you are selling products, I don’t think that people who are running clunky ten year old PC’s will be your target audience anyway. But if your target market is China… then you would need to continue to support IE6 since half the users there are using IE6.

Note that since March 1st 2010, Google no longer supports IE6 on its Google Docs and Google Sites services. IE users will have to upgrade to at least version 7 if they want to use those products.

Another thing to note is that web developers should not be making their designs “compliant” for certain web browsers. It should be the other way around that the web browsers must be compliant to the HTML specifications.

Now lets look at some other interesting data…

Search Engines (Global Market Share)

Google is completely dominating the search engine space with 90% market share. This indicates to me that it is just a waste of time to do SEO work so your site will rank higher on Yahoo or Bing.

Search Engines (China Market Share)

But once again, it’s a different story in China. It’s basically a battle between Google and Baidu (although this mirror reversal chart does look a little suspect to me).

Update: I sent an email to Clicky Web Analytics to ask them about this abnormality in their charts and they promptly sent me a response.

Kirk, I’m the developer. My guess for the China data being strange is because we don’t have many Chinese sites registered with us. So with a very small sample size, the data is going to have big spikes in both directions like that. And since Google and Baidu are the two biggest search engines over there, when one goes up the other must come down. Sean.

Mobile Phones (Global Market Share)

What about mobile phones? What is interesting from this chart is that although iPhone sales are increasing, the actual market share usage is decreasing. The two platforms that are increasing market share are the iPad and Android devices.

Apple Products (Global Market Share)

When we drill down into just Apple product data, it is clear that the iPad is increasing being used as a web browser. I’ll be sure to test my websites on iPad’s from now on. I am not too concerned about making my sites suitable for iPhones since the screen real estate is just to small and I would have to implement an iPhone specific version of each site. Something to consider on a per site basis.

iPhone vs Android (Global Market Share)

This is a most interesting chart that shows the increasing market share of Android devices. As a developer I much prefer developing for Android in Java instead of the iPhone and it’s archaic Objective-C that should have been retired in the 1990′s.

Tuts Marketplace: Create a Big Air Event Poster

I recently came across the work of illustrator Chrissie Abbott and I was immediately struck by her clever use of combining retro and modern imagery and her use of bold, vibrant colors. In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through the creation of an extreme sport event poster using a similar style.

The poster theme is based on a vert skate competition, so all the imagery, such as space, mountains and flight are all relevant and have been sourced either from my own collection of vintage, copyright-free magazines or stock websites, as well as some freely available images courtesy of NASA . I’d also like to thank surf/skate photographer Paul Frost for kindly allowing me to use his skateboarder photo.

As far as techniques go you’ll discover how to create precise bleed and crop marks in both Photoshop and Illustrator. You’ll also master Illustrator’s Pathfinder and Offset Path commands to create some cool ornate lettering. Finally, you’ll bring all these elements together with Photoshop and assemble the final, print-ready artwork in Illustrator. Download Link

So you’re looking for a web hosting company to host your website for the first time and you just don’t know that much about it. Well, it can be a fairly daunting task due to the overwhelming number of people and companies out there claiming to be the best. Not to mention the endless options and vast array of pricing plans. Finding cheap, dedicated servers may be your best bet or maybe a big name hosting site is the way to go. It can be rather confusing at first, but read the following paragraphs and find out what to look for when choosing a hosting provider for the first time.

The Best Value for Money Web Hosting

For first-time buyers of web hosting, going with a large web hosting company seems like the best thing to do. You want the reliability and service that typically come with a big name provider. While this might seem like a good plan, and is probably the most hassle-free and quickest approach, it may not be the way you want to go since you might end up paying more than you need to. Check with some online sources that provide information such as WebHostingSearch.com. These sites provide information on website hosting companies, both large and small. Look for specific, in-depth reviews and customer testimonials. In this case, size may not matter. Quality of service, reliability, overall cost and ease of use may be more important to you.

Don’t Buy more than you Need

First-time buyers of web hosting usually depend on other sources to tell them what is best for them. Remember that any web hosting company is going to tell you that their service is the best for your particular needs. After all, it’s their job to sell services for their company. Some web hosting companies may sell you a package with 5GB of web space for a “great price.” While they may indeed have a great price, you may never use 5GB for your website. Make sure you know beforehand what services you will need for your website. Alternatively, some web hosting providers may give you unlimited space and bandwidth. But in this case, the shared server is so overloaded and outdated that the response time is very poor and the web hosting plan is next to useless. You need more information than just the specifications that the web hosting provider gives you.

A Control Panel that you can use

Getting a deal from one of the top hosting sites, or finding a cheap dedicated server for a great price isn’t going to mean much if you can’t understand and use the website control panel. If you’re new to web hosting, try and find a hosting provider that uses cPanel for their website configuration. It’s one of the best and most popular web server configuration / management interfaces for shared hosting. Also look for tools like automatic script installers and website building tools. Programs like Fantastico make installing and uninstalling application (such as WordPress etc) on your server very quick and easy.

Server Size and Speed might be Important

If your website is going to be used for personal use, the amount of time it takes to upload and download files may not be that important. If your website is used for business, server speed is going to be a huge factor. Be certain to check with each individual website hosting company and find out their load times. If you’re in business, a slow download or upload time is going to lose customers quicker than anything. If you’re going to host videos on your website, make sure the website hosting company can handle uploading large files. Some website hosting companies limit the size of files you can upload. Be sure to check with each individual website host, and get all the details before you commit. Try and pay by the month initially so you can test out the web server you are allocated. You don’t want to pay for a whole years hosting to find out that the web server is dead slow. The location of the web server is also important. Where is most of your traffic coming from? Consider locating your web server on the west or east of the US or in Europe. Some providers give you the option of web server location.

Check Web Hosting Site Downtime

One of the worst things to happen to any website is downtime. Even the biggest, top hosting sites can experience downtime. If you’re running a business website, downtime can cost serious money in lost profits, and loss of customers for the long-term. Make sure the website hosting provider you have selected has properly configured firewalls and uses SSL data encryption for all of your website information. SSL data encryption changes sensitive data from plain text into a code that will make it difficult for hackers to access and steal. Most top hosting sites offer these security features. If you don’t see this included in the website hosting, ask the company specifically about these important features.

The best thing you can do before committing to a service contract with any website hosting provider is to arm yourself with information. It’s going to take some time and effort to learn a few basic bits of information before you make a decision. But that time and effort could literally save you a lot of money and headaches over the next few years. Whether you do business with one of the top hosting sites or with a company that has a great deal using a cheap, dedicated server, you’re going to want to work with a company you can rely on. Take some time, and spend some do some research before you decide which web hosting service is right for your specific needs.

As a web designer / developer, reading reference material while developing is essential since there is just no way that anyone could keep all of the syntax for any API in memory.

Whilst all languages and frameworks have complete documentation accessible on the internet, recently I have noticed that a few iPhone apps have been created so that documentation is accessible offline.

Some examples from the iTunes App Store:

HTML5 Reference Guide – Free

PHPMan – US$0.99

jQRef – US$0.99

Lately, I have been doing a bit of development with jQuery, so I thought I would write a review of the jQRef iPhone app by Luke Borloz which I think is quite useful.

The official description is… jQRef comes complete with the latest documentation from jQuery, including features from the new 1.4.3 release.

But first, you might be thinking “Why would I need a jQuery reference app on my iPhone, when I can just go to the jQuery website?”

There are a number of reasons, but the main reasons for me are:

You are temporarily developing on a laptop without access to the internet. eg: On a plane, on the subway etc.

A native app with all the documentation pre-loaded is much faster than trying to view a non-iPhone formatted website over 3G.

Being able to save favorites is handy.

Searching using filters (All, Category, Method, Property & Selector) is useful.

If you don’t have two monitors, having the jQuery documentation on another small iPhone screen is nice.

It’s fast.

Have an easy to browse jQuery pocket reference.

I compared the jQRef documentation to the official jQuery documentation and it is exactly the same. The only difference that I could find is that the app documentation version is 1.4.3, but the official jQuery documentation is now up to 1.4.4 (released Nov 11th 2010), but that is a very recent jQuery release with only one extra feature – .fadeToggle() and a bunch of bug fixes and enhancements.

The only thing that you can’t really do is copy ‘n paste the snippets of code from the documentation into your own project since the documentation is on the iPhone. But the main reason I would be using this app is because I don’t have a connection to the internet, so without the app I wouldn’t have any documentation at all.

Another thing to note is that you can scroll the code snippets horizontally by using a two finger gesture. Landscape orientation has not been implemented yet but the author is considering implementing it in the next release.

Here are the main features of jQRef:

Easily browse the full jQuery library, whether sitting at your desk, on the plane, or simply on the go. Browse by category or even jQuery version number.

View detailed information on each jQuery property, method, or selector, complete with descriptions, method signatures and argument descriptions.
